A longtime Maui resident,
I have over the years formed personal opinions as to my
favorite Maui restaurants,
Maui activities, activity providers, dinner cruises, discounts,
and so forth, which I share
with you here.
Rest assured, I have received
absolutely nothing (nada, zero) for the
following recommendations
and/or opinions!
Favorite "Hidden" Restaurant for Breakfast: The Gazebo.
Excellent ocean view from their secluded beachfront location, cozy atmosphere, and consistently good breakfasts! Drive north of Lahaina (on the
"Lower" road) to Napili Shores, then walk toward the beach. Tell Jerry and his wife (the pretty, blond lady with the big smile) I sent you.Favorite Out-of-the-Way Beachfront Restaurant in Lahaina for Breakfast: Hecocks.
Great on-the-water view, consistantly-yummy food, and conveniently located at 505 Front Street in Lahaina Town.Favorite Restaurant for "Dining": Roys in Kahana.
Despite the open, unimaginative, usually-noisy floorplan, an excellent restaurant with a very complete "Maui" menu. I would be satisfied with a
basket of Roy's rolls and a half-dozen small bowls of his wonderful sauces to soak up. Reservations: 669-6999.Favorite Fish Restaurant: Paia Fish Market Restaurant in Paia Town.
This is the place for the absolute BEST FISH on Maui! I've eaten there for 20 years and it's always a special treat to be able to introduce friends to this dining experience. Nothing fancy about the place, just really great food. Have the Mahi dinner, and tell them you want half-and-half, which means that in addition to their tasty coleslaw you'll get both the rice and potatos. The fish tacos are yummy, too! Nothing "normal" or "usual" about any of this; it's prepared by folks who take pride in the excellent quality of this affordable fare. Much better than the expensive well-known restaurants here on Maui, at a third to half the price. On the corner in Paia Town at 100 Hana Highway. 808-579-8030.Favorite Dinner Cruise: The Maui Princess. (Picture)
Informal to casual dress, and the food is first class! Also ask about the Lahaina Princess "Barefoot" (casual) dinner cruise on Friday nights...Prime Rib and Chicken Dinner! You'll most likely see me there. When there's good food, I'm usually not far away...Favorite Dinner Train: The Paniolo Express Dinner Train. (Actually, the ONLY dinner train)
This is my absolute favorite alternative to fighting the crowds at Luaus. A fun train ride on Maui's
world-famous Sugar Cane Train, followed by an all-you-can-eat Hawaiian style BBQ feast and live entertainment. And they treat you like family...it just doesn't get any better than this! Call for reservations and additional information: 808-667-6851. (Picture)Favorite Plate Lunch (Cheap Eats):
In Lahaina, at the Lahaina Cannery Mall, it's L&L Drive-In!
Try the B.B.Q. Chicken Plate Lunch: Enough Teriyaki Chicken for two people, 2 scoops sticky rice, one scoop macaroni salad. It's truly ono (delicious!!).Favorite Money-Saving Tip:
To save $$ on Maui accommodations, pick up a copy of the Entertainment Book (coupon book) for Hawaii and use the coupon inside for half-off rack rates. So easy, so simple, so easily overlooked!!Favorite Discounts: Coupons, Maps, Information and some discounts are currently available in the Maui Info Pack!
Favorite Accommodations: Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas! Nice, quiet, well-kept grounds. On a beautiful beach perfect for swimming. Just a short walk from a nearby park with bbq's, showers, excellent snorkeling. Not a high-rise, no crowds, few families with herds of kids. Small restaurant on the beach (Castaways). Three swimming pools. Activities Desk in Lobby. Full-time Security. You can call the "800" number for Aston Resorts, or call Maui Kaanapali Villas direct at 808-667-7791.

Favorite Maui Activity Reservation Agency:
Hawaiian Safari Activity Reservations.
It's smart to call ahead and pre-book your must-do activities in order to make certain there's space available when you plan to be here. In business in the same location for 20+ years. Knowledgeable, honest, and no timeshare! 808-667-1988. Call and ask Dawn about pre-booking your Maui activities.Favorite Activities: Helicopters & Luaus.
I enjoyed my first helicopter tour here on Maui so much that I started taking helicopter flying lessons (until the flight school quit making their payments and our helicopters were repossessed). Favorites are Sunshine Helicopters and Alex Air Helicopters (888-418-8458; tell 'em Scott sent ya!).There are two types of luaus--Traditional (strictly Hawaiian culture) and Polynesian (includes other South Pacific cultures and has firedancers). They all have great food. Favorites are The Old Lahaina Luau, a Traditional luau, and The Marriott Luau, a Polynesian luau. Remember to tip the bartender!
Favorite Activities: Submarine. (Picture)
Atlantis Submarines! Very professional staff, nice view of Maui (Lahaina area and West Maui Mountains) from the water on the ride out to the sub (take your cameras), and a tour of two reefs (and friendly fish with names) down to a maximum depth of 130'.Favorite Sub Sandwich Shops:
In Lahaina, it's Mr. Sub, on Lahainaluna Road.
In Kahului, it's Sub Paradise, on Dairy Road, not far from the Kahului Airport.Favorite Place to Eat Your Sub Sandwich:
Pick up a sub sandwich, some chips, a pickle and soft drink, then head off to the Iao Needle for a picnic. Great place to sit on a rock, dangle your feet in the water (Iao Stream), eat your lunch and mellow out to the sound of the water. It's on all the maps...Favorite Local Bumper Sticker:
I noticed this bumper sticker in the Lahaina area recently. As some of you may already know, we don't honk our horns in Paradise, which contributes to the humor: "Horn Broken...Watch for Finger!"Language:
Flip-flops and/or sandals are called "slippers" here. Take them off when entering a home!
When you're done/finished with something, you're "pau." (pow) As in, "No, thanks, I'm pau."
Ono: Excellent.
Grinds: Food. As in, "Ono grinds, brah!"
Grind: The act of grinding (eating). As in, "Let's grind!"
Luau: A party, gathering, celebration...don't confuse with Lua!
Lua: The bathroom, restroom...don't confuse with Luau!
Pua: Flower
Puu: Hill
Lani: HeavenlyCheck Back Often...More Favorites to Come!
